What I Wore Wednesday #5

Even though I am starting to feel very silly posing for pictures to post on my own blog, I am again linking up to The Pleated Poppy's What I Wore Wednesday.  I have to admit, since I've been participating, I have really been putting a lot more thought into what I'm wearing.  It makes me feel good about myself!  It's been very warm here in Florida, so I got to go back into my spring/summer wardrobe this week.

I have no idea how to not look totally stupid when I pose, so most of my pictures look exactly the same.  The exception being Saturday's picture.  Pose. Gone. Wrong.  I was trying to duplicate a pose I've seen many others do so effortlessly and instead of looking nonchalant and thoughtful, I look like a sleep-deprived secret service agent listening to my orders via earpiece.  Oh well.

What I Wore Wednesday #4-Sick with a side of leggings

Well, my in-laws left and, unfortunately, my father-in-law also left his cold behind.  Somehow, JB never got sick.  Which was a total miracle because DH and I were down for the count the rest of the week and weekend.  I spent most of the time in "sick-wear" but did manage a few more comfy outfits before and after sickness.  I finally got to wear my new leggings this week and have decided I'm in LOVE!  They did get washed between wears, just in case you're wondering.  Exception: from Monday to Tuesday.  I was planning to get outside on Monday but JB had other plans (darn those teething meltdowns) so I had them on for all of 15 minutes.  But leggings are sooo comfy and baby-friendly!  I also have a long pair but am waiting for it to cool off a bit before wearing those.

THURSDAY:

EVENT:  Weekly Target Trip
Denim Jacket:  Old Navy
Red sleeveless tunic:  Consignment
Black leggings:  Target
Flats:  Payless Shoes

MONDAY:

EVENT:  Was planning to finally escape cabin fever, but it didn't happen...

Black Leggings:  Target
Black cami:  Old Navy
Black Scarf w/ white polka dots:  Kohl's (borrowed from a shirt)
Flats:  Payless Shoes

TUESDAY:

EVENT:  A walk with JB
Leggings:  Target
Black Ribbed Tank:  Old Navy
White Swimsuit cover-up (I used it as a tunic!):  Old Navy
I also wore my black reef flip-flops (I HEART them!)

What I Wore Wednesday #3

What a week!  My in-laws are in town from up north so we've been busy busy busy!  JB is relishing every bit of this extra attention from Grandma and Grandpa.  She's developed this wonderful high-pitched shriek that she's been showing off the whole time.  It's really extra special when she does it right next to your ear.

At any rate, we've been out and about, shopping and letting Grandma and Grandpa soak up some of this Florida sun before heading back up to the snow! I am going to apologize now for the terrible picture quality/creativity this week.  I admit, I was a little embarrassed to tell them I dress up for a weekly blog link party so I had to sneak pics of myself in my room when I got dressed, limiting myself to two attempts, less they heard the camera snapping away and got suspicious. *sigh* The things we do in the name of vanity…

I did manage to snap Tuesday's pics while the in-laws were at the pool.  I need to practice the self-timer app a little more.  I chopped my head off several times.

So without further ado, here's what I (sneakily) wore:

SATURDAY:

EVENT:  Family grocery store trip (yes, all 4 1/2 of us went)
Cardigan:  Target
Long-sleeved striped shirt and white undershirt:  Old Navy
Jeans:  GAP

SUNDAY:
EVENT:  Kohl's trip
Sweater, cami and khakis:  Old Navy
(One of many "Old Navy Uniforms")

MONDAY:
EVENT:  Trip to Target (shocker, I know)
Purple plaid flannel shirt:  Target
Cami:  Old Navy
Capris:  Lucky Brand Jeans

TUESDAY:

EVENT: Doctor's appointment
Purple shirt:  NY&Co
Gray Khakis & White tank:  Old Navy
Shoes:  Sketchers
Long Necklace:  Limited
Short Necklace:  Too old to remember

Disclaimer:  I swear I wore shoes this week too.  Mostly my sketchers and Reef sandals, but we rarely wear shoes in the house and since I was hiding my WIWW obsession, I didn't bother bringing them in for the pictures (only Tuesday's).  Also, it appears I had a thing for purple this week.  Hmmm….

And to distract you from this less than sub par fashion post and as an attempt to gain your forgiveness, here's a picture of my sweet angel girl, all dressed up in her piggy tails.  At least someone in this house looks good every day.

Outfit:  Gift from Grandma and Grandpa
Hair bows:  Made by me!

Creamy Caprese Pasta

I am a HUGE Caprese salad fan and an even huger (is that a word?) pasta fan so when I saw this on Pinterest, I just knew I was going to have to make it.  It turned out pretty yummy but I'm a "sauce girl" so when we heated up the leftovers the next night, I warmed up some of the remaining spaghetti sauce and a bit of the cream in a saucepan.  After I took the plate of pasta out of the microwave, I sprinkled some extra shredded cheese over the hot pasta, then spooned more of the warmed sauce over it all.  That seemed to help satisfy my need for gooey, saucy pasta.  I may just double the amount of sauce and cheese called for in the recipe the next time I make this.  At any rate, it was delicious and the grape tomatoes really gave it a fresh taste.  You can find the recipe here.  Here's some pics of my finished product:

What I Wore Wednesday #2

I didn't leave my house until Sunday.  I know I live in Florida and we pretty much have awesome weather most of the time, and I'm going to sound like a totally weenie saying this, but… it was cold.

Don't judge me.  Your blood would thin out too after living here a few years.

Anyhoo, JB and I spent most of the week in the warmth and comfort of our home wearing footed jammies, sleep sacks and pj pants stuffed into knee-high snowboard socks.  I'll let you figure out who wore what.

I did, however, manage to get out of the house a couple of times after the "cold front" passed us by.

SUNDAY:

I drew the inspiration to layer these necklaces from this WIWW post from the gals over at g*rated. Did I pull it off?  Those ladies are super cute and stylish!

EVENT:  Dinner w/ DH & JB
Wrap dress and white cami:  Old Navy
Shoes:  Payless
Sunglasses: Coach
Necklaces:  Too old to remember
Watch:  Michael Kors

TUESDAY:

EVENT: Trip to Target (we love Target around here)
Cowl-neck sweater:  Banana Republic
Lace cami:  Old Navy
Jeans:  Citizens of Humanity
Sandals:  Reef
Watch:  Michael Kors
Necklaces:
Long large-beaded:  Consignment
Long small-beaded:  Garage sale
Short:  Leather strap necklace from a boutique paired with a medallion from a broken necklace

I tried the layered necklace look again.  I think I like it!  Easy way to spice up an otherwise boring outfit. I really need to work on posing.  I look like a paper doll… Same position, different clothes.

What I Wore Wednesday #1

I am totally new to this whole SAHM thing. Don't get me wrong, I love it. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I do, however, miss brushing my teeth. And brushing my hair. And not having to seriously stop and think, When was the last time I ate?? I caught a glimpse of myself while changing JB's diaper the other day (why oh why I put a mirror in my daughter's room is beyond me…) and almost crawled under her crib in shame. My hair was ALL OVER my head, only scant pieces remaining in the hair elastic I had put in there three days ago, my face was bare and splotchy and I was standing on the too-long legs of my fold-over worn out yoga pants (aka pajamas) paired with my long-sleeved thermal covered in spit-up.

Conveniently, this is roughly around the same time I discovered the blog Musings of a Housewife (fabulous style!!) and her links to The Pleated Poppy's "What I Wore Wednesdays".  I drooled over hundreds and hundreds of moms, just like me, dedicated to being held accountable for what they look like on a (somewhat) daily basis.  Everyone looked so chic, so put-together!   I can be stylish, I thought.  At least I used to be what I would consider relatively stylish.  So I made a decision.  I will participate.  I will get my drool-covered butt up and make more of an effort to pull myself together.  If other moms can do it, I can do it.  I will not guarantee every day (yet) but I will try harder to look like I care what I look like when I set foot out of this house.  Baby steps.

TUESDAY:

Disclaimer:  This was when I first discovered WIWW and since I didn't want to just post one day's worth of outfit, I'm adding it to this week.  This is also before I downloaded the self-timer app for the camera on my phone. I'll let you know how that works.  And the lighting is totally awful here, so future photos will (hopefully) be better.  Be gentle, I'm new.

EVENT: Trip to Target
Long-sleeved black shirt: Old Navy
Sleeveless flannel tunic: Craigslist special (tag says Miley Cyrus--I didn't even know she had a clothing line!)
Black puffy vest (top photo): NY & Company (a loooong time ago)
Skinny Jeans in dark wash: Wet Seal
Tall Black Boots:  Kohl's
Ponytail: compliments of a failed sock-bun attempt

SATURDAY:

EVENT:  Shopping trip for Mommy (while DH watched JB)
Denim jacket, Long-sleeved striped shirt, white cami, khaki pants: Old Navy
Necklace: so old I can't remember (rare opportunity to wear jewelry when I don't have JB)

This same day, I was excited to get home and discover that my package from Old Navy had arrived with my new "mom uniforms".  I figured wearing actual sweats that fit is a step up from crusty, week-old pj's.  Even though I plan on trying harder, let's be honest, I'm going to have sweat pant days (notice Wed-Fri are missing?  Baby reflux days…)  At least they can be kind of cute.

Oh so comfy… Please ignore our messy bedroom.  These pictures are proving to be a huge reality check for me.

Later that night, I cooked a delicious New Year's Eve dinner (recipe posted here) for DH and I.  Since I'm trying harder on my appearance, I decided to knock DH's socks off and finish cooking dinner in THIS:

Black dress:  Charlotte Russe
Red Heels:  Jessica Simpson
Red Belt:  Local Boutique
Necklace:  Too old to remember. Maybe Target?

SUNDAY:

EVENT:  Errands with DH and JB
Teal cardigan, long sleeved-shirt:  Old Navy
Boot-cut jeans:  GAP
Necklace and sandals:  Target
Sunglasses:  Coach
(After looking at this photo, I can see that this outfit needed something but I'm not sure what.  Maybe the cardi needs something more?  If someone has any suggestions, please let me know.  Thanks!)

I won't lie.  The rest of the week was spent "enjoying" my new sweats, but I did purge and reorganize my closet so that I could see what I had in my wardrobe to create many new outfits for future WIWW posts.  And on a side note, the self-timer app is not working very well so far.  From the looks of all these grainy pictures, it looks like I need to invest in a REAL camera anyway, not my cell phone or point-and-shoot camera.  We'll see.

Welcoming a fresh start in 2012!

I've never been very big on making New Year's resolutions, and if I did, it was always one I could keep.  For example, GAIN 5 pounds this year.  (Best resolution ever, I might add…)  But things have changed so much in my life this past year that I was really forced to look at things and re-evaluate a few areas.  Being pregnant for most of 2011, then welcoming a beautiful baby girl into our lives made quite an impact on me, physically and emotionally.  So here are my resolutions for 2012 (and all the years to follow, God-willing) in no particular order:

1.  Take more pride in my appearance.
I have really let myself go since JB was born.  It's hard thinking of anything besides her and unfortunately that means I have put myself way on the back burner.  I realize that when I take a few minutes for myself, I feel better about myself and in turn, I'm a happier mommy for her.  So I'm currently working on a "home schedule" that allows me a little room for a morning shower, teeth brushing and getting dressed.  I also will be putting in a bit more effort in my clothing choices.  Eventually exercise will work it's way in there too, even if it's just daily walks with JB.

2.  Stop saving things for "a special occasion".
No more staring longingly at my beautiful unused stemware and dishes, or those amazing shoes that have yet to see the pavement, or that divine dress that would be perfect for dinner at the perfect restaurant.  I'm going to use/wear these things as often as I can.  Life is not promised to us.  Every day is a special occasion.

3.  Blog more.
I love blogs.  I love the sense of online community that bloggers seem to share.  Recipes, home decor, fashion, parenting tips…  I want to join in!  I have enjoyed writing on this blog from time to time but never really dedicated enough time to make it relevant.  This year I will put more time toward sharing my experiences with others and forming bonds with more moms and women like myself.

4.  Build more Godly character qualities:
I printed off this list of character qualities from the Duggar family website a few years ago.  It lists 49 positive character qualities along with bible verses that correlate with each particular quality.  I would like to take a quality each week, spend the week studying the verses that support it and practice integrating it into my life daily.  I want to teach my daughter how to be a good person by example and I know I have lots of room for improvement before I start guiding her.  I also hope to strengthen my personal faith and relationship with God during this process.

So here's to a year that is sure to be even more joyful and more random than the one before it.  Wishing many blessings to everyone in 2012 and the many years to follow!
